Yoni steaming - also referred to as vaginal or V-steaming - is the practice of using an herbal steam as both a form of nourishing, meditative self-care and to help alleviate complaints associated with one's monthly menstrual cycle. Yoni steaming is typically undertaken two to three times in the week leading up to your period. Practicing yoni steaming before bedtime not only promotes a better sleep, but allows you to take advantage of the positive effects of the steam as you sleep.
To prepare your yoni steam, bring a quarter to a half-cup of herbs to a boil on the stove in a covered gallon-sized pot. Once the water begins to bubble, turn off the heat and allow the herbs to steep, remaining covered, for a minimum of 15 minutes. Keeping your pot covered helps prevent the volatile oils of the herbs from escaping.
The herbal-infused water for your steam should be hot, but definitely not scalding. Be sure to allow it to cool slightly if necessary, or add some cold water to ensure it's the appropriate temperature.
Next, place your pot in your bathtub (it can be sat on a towel if needed) and undress from the waist down. Sitting on the edge of your tub, carefully position yourself over the pot, part your legs, and wrap a large towel or blanket around your waist to trap the steam emanating from the pot. Remain in this position for 15 to 20 minutes. If you struggle to remain still for this amount of time, try listening to a guided meditation or reading a chapter from a book. Enjoy the ritual of yoni steaming as an opportunity to be present and connect meaningfully with your body.
The absorption of the therapeutic compounds of the herbs through the delicate, permeable mucus membranes of the vagina are said to aid in circulation and address complaints such as cramps and bloating. The practice of yoni steaming is also said to help bring on delayed menses and, with regular practice, regulate monthly cycles.
